Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
