The feeling at their home stadium was far from happy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Falling Apart?
Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if progress is being made or imploding.
Matteo's Surprising Presence
One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.
He signed in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Discovering His True Position
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
