EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
