Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
