Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Officers report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found many other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police state early analysis indicate the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they commented.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the case" and have asked to the residents for information.
An important official said the incident made him without words and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at residents of migrant background in five years prior.
